Attorney General William Barr said the Department of Justice has evidence that radical leftist group Antifa has spurred many of the violent protests that have taken place in recent days on the heels of protests over police brutality and racism.
Barr said that most of the protests have been peaceful, but that Antifa has goals to “sow discord and upheaval, rather than join in the righteous pursuit of equality and justice.”
On Sunday, Barr said that violent protesters represented “domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly.”
“We’ve directed our 200 joint terrorism task forces around the country to assist law enforcement with apprehending and charging violent agitators who are hijacking peaceful protests on a national level,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said.
“With the rioting that is occurring in many of our cities around the country, the voices of peaceful and legitimate protests have been hijacked by violent radical elements. Groups of outside radicals and agitators are exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate, violent, and extremist agenda,” Barr said in a statement. “It is time to stop watching the violence and to confront and stop it.”
