Attorney General William Barr just issued a shocking reversal. The mainstream media is reporting that President Donald Trump is stunned, but it is far more complicated than they would have you believe.
According to a spokeswoman for Barr, the attorney general doesn’t have his mind made up yet on the pending deal between Oracle and Walmart — two trusted, U.S.-based companies — and the Chinese-owned social media app, TikTok.
Barr “is still in the fact-gathering stage and has not reached a final decision or made a final recommendation to the president,” said his spokeswoman to Fox Business. Reportedly, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo isn’t settled on the deal yet, either.
The current discussion is around how much ByteDance — the Chinese company that owns TikTok — will still have control under a potential partnership between Oracle and Walmart. National security concerns may still persist regarding user data.
However, Trump has struck a slightly different tone. “They are going to own the controlling interest,” said Trump on Fox News, referring to Oracle and Walmart. “If we find that they don’t have total control, then we’re not going to approve the deal.”
Perhaps this isn’t a conflict between Trump and his national experts after all, though. The media is certainly trying to spin it that way, but it appears that all levels of the U.S. government are watching this closely and want what’s best for consumers.
