A White House press plane was grounded on Tuesday when cicadas got into the engine and caused mechanical problems.
A spokesperson for Delta confirmed that the plane’s engine was clogged by the insects, which are part of Brood X and emerged from feeding underground this spring.
The flight was delayed five hours as the airline had to get a new plane to fly the reporters.
Pizza was delivered to the reporters while they waited, the bar stayed open later for them, and they were given the option of waiting in a hotel room.
Trillions of cicadas are expected to infest areas in 15 states through mid- to late June.
