Dershowitz also said “Lincoln would be impeached” under their standards, which said that if any part of a president’s motive is for their own self-interest, it is impeachable.
“Everybody in this room, every senator, every politician everywhere always has one eye toward re-election, another eye toward the public interest,” Dershowitz said. “They almost always think it’s the same. They also think their own election is in the public interest. You can’t make that an impeachable offense.”
It may have been this powerful and persuasive argument by Dershowitz that led to Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Lamar Alexander (R-TN) deciding that no more witnesses or documents were needed to vote on the articles of impeachment.
