Presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden’s pick for vice president will give an indication about how long he will serve, the Associated Press reported.
Biden has called himself a “transitional candidate” to a younger generation of leadership, and has said that he will not seek re-election if he experienced a decline in health, either physical or mental.
Biden has not explicitly said he wouldn’t seek a second term if elected in 2020, because he doesn’t want to lose the majority of his political capital by doing so.
Having pledged to choose a woman as vice president, he is precluded from choosing Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and consolidating Sanders’ support behind his candidacy.
His choice may mean more than with previous candidates because of his age and the higher-than-normal possibility that his health could render him unable to serve out his first term.
