Analysis of the immigration situation shows that President Joe Biden’s first year in office could be one of the ten worst in history for illegal immigration.
There were 172,000 illegal border crossers detained by Border Patrol in May, an almost 700% increase from the year before after former President Donald Trump had put strict rules and agreements with border countries in place.
“For the calendar year as a whole, we are projecting 1.2 million southwest border apprehensions, much as we have for the last two months,” Princeton Policy Advisor Steven Kopits wrote in his analysis. “This would make Calendar Year 2021 among the ten worst years for illegal immigration in US history and place us squarely back into Clinton-era numbers.”
If Kopits’s numbers are correct, it would be the highest illegal immigration numbers since 2001.
DHS Secretary Alexander Mayorkas has not been following a rule, Title 42, that returns illegal border crossers to their home countries for health reasons, and that had kept 91% of illegal border crossers out of the U.S. under Trump.
