Former Vice President Joe Biden has confirmed the rumors. He is preparing to choose who his running mate will be — and the choice is sure to stun the American people. We are about to find out just how much.
Biden said that he will “start that vetting process relatively soon, meaning in a matter of weeks,” and “there will be a group that is in excess of six or seven people that I look at — because those background checks matter.”
After a rocky start, Biden shot back to prominence after winning the Democratic primary in South Carolina. Since that time, he has won every primary and now holds 1,215 delegates. It takes 1,991 delegates to win.
By contrast, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) currently has 909 delegates. At this point, his role appears to be the one of spoiler and he won’t have a problem riding that train all the way to the party’s convention.
Still, Biden is confident enough that he has shifted into general election mode. He also recently promised to select a woman as his vice-presidential running mate, which narrows down the selection a bit.
Biden could end up choosing one of at least three U.S. senators: Kamala Harris (D-CA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), or Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). Former candidate for Georgia governor, Stacey Abrams, is also a possibility.
