Reports from a 2,000-child detention center for migrant children in Fort Bliss, Texas are detailing appalling conditions including inadequate food, lack of clean clothing, and even allegations of sexual abuse.
The Associated Press and BBC have released findings from an investigation into the facilities, which house tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors that have crossed the border with or without a parent.
The conditions include undercooked meat, cases of COVID-19, outbreaks of head lice, children waiting 12 hours for medical attention, and children not having clean clothes to wear, including underclothing.
“After a child has been here for a few days, they say, ‘you’ve got to get me out of here as soon as possible. I just can’t stand it anymore,’” he added. “They feel like they are in a prison.”
It is such a mess that children with identified relatives are not even being released to them for weeks or months. And yet the press has barely covered this and has even made excuses for it as being “unintentional” while blaming former President Donald Trump for allowing adverse conditions purposely to discourage immigration.
