A group of House Republicans led by Chip Roy (TX) said in a letter to DHS Secretary Alexander Mayorkas that they are prepared to take legislative action against his agency if it hides data on the number of COVID-positive illegal immigrants from Congress.
The letter calls Mayorkas’s leadership “lackluster” and say that President Joe Biden’s “weak border policies” have caused “appalling” immigration totals that are now nearing 200,000 per month.
“The June numbers put the United States at over 1 million encounters in just the first 7 months of this fiscal year,” they wrote.
They set a deadline of September 6 for DHS to deliver the data they seek, or else they will take action to compel the agency to comply.
“The American people and migrants seeking to come here deserve better than the chaos of a wide-open border,” they continued. “Without such a foundational mechanism as enforcement of the rule of law, you cannot begin to uphold the words of DHS’s mission.”
