While President Joe Biden has spent $3 billion housing and feeding thousands of illegal immigrant children now coming into the U.S., illegal immigrants currently already in the U.S. are facing a homelessness crisis because they don’t have the safety net legal immigrants and citizens have.
Illegal immigrants often work low-paying, cash jobs in restaurants that have dried up since the pandemic.
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights in Los Angeles has reported an increase in calls for assistance over the last six months, citing “a complete unraveling of the safety net for undocumented immigrants.”
And in Queens, New York, immigrant homeless encampments have been increasing, according to aid workers.
New York’s government has offered migrants $15,600 payments to stay in the city, which may help them at least for a while.
