Former President Barack Obama held a large-scale birthday party Saturday night to celebrate turning 60 that included many celebrities and golf buddies even though he claimed he was scaling back the gala.
“Due to the new spread of the Delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs. Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends,” spokeswoman Hannah Hankins said in a statement on Wednesday. “He’s appreciative of others sending their birthday wishes from afar and looks forward to seeing people soon.”
The party was originally planned to include 400-plus guests and 200 staff, but was scaled back after criticism from those concerned about the risk of spreading COVID through the event.
Even so, however, it included many famous names including John Legend and Missy Teigen, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, Don Cheadle, Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union, Eryka Badu, and Oprah Winfrey.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) also flew into Martha’s Vineyard for the event, which was largely unmasked, even though she is demanding that all House members wear masks in the chamber.
