Two U.S. B-52 “Stratofortress” bombers were sent to the Middle East on short notice last week, the U.S. Central Command announced on Wednesday.
The bombers’ “deliberate appearance” was meant to “underscore the U.S. military’s commitment to regional security and demonstrate a unique ability to rapidly deploy overwhelming combat power on short notice,” CENTCOM said.
The show of force is meant to prepare for possible retaliation by Iran to the assassination of its top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, by Israel in November.
There could also be retaliation for the U.S. assassination of Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani last year as the anniversary of that action nears.
The U.S. and Israel both also have other aircraft in the area as well.
