Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Michael Sherwin said on Friday that the DOJ had no evidence that rioters had “kill teams” that intended to kidnap or assassinate lawmakers during the violence that occurred on January 6.
“We don’t have any direct evidence of kill capture teams,” Sherwin told reporters during a press briefing.
His remarks were believed to refer to claims federal prosecutors in Arizona made in a late Thursday court filing that some of those who entered the Capitol intended “to capture and assassinate elected officials.”
The Arizona claims were made in order to detain Jacob Chansley, an alleged QAnon conspirator who was seen inside the Capitol in an animal skin tunic and horns.
Never-Trumper Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) made much of the assassination claims after the Arizona announcement, but didn’t respond to Sherwin’s assessment.
