Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survived an assassination attempt via armed drones on Sunday.
Iran-backed militias are the primary suspects as tensions have been rising in Iraq for months.
Al-Kadhimi said following the attack that “Cowardly rocket and drone attacks don’t build homelands and don’t build a future.”
Iranian factions in Iraq seem to care little for building a homeland as they have refused to accept Iraq’s parliamentary elections. The elections were a disaster for Iranian influence, and this attempt on the Prime Minister’s life reflects that.
The United States quickly responded to the assassination attempt by denouncing Iranian entities in Iraq and calling for peace.
The situation in Iraq is rapidly evolving and is something that Americans need to keep an eye on. If the violence intensifies, all eyes will be on President Joe Biden.
