New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had to defeat a surprise challenge to lead his state’s delegation to the Democrat National Convention when someone nominated Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for that position.
Traditionally, the state’s governor would lead the delegation, not a freshman congressperson.
Cuomo was able to defeat Ocasio-Cortez’s challenge by a vote of 218 to 34, however.
Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs said he was blindsided by the move, and he was also disappointed by the lack of unity the state party displayed.
Jacobs didn’t think Ocasio-Cortez herself had instigated the challenge.
