Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) went ballistic over the new abortion law in Texas that restricts the procedure to the first six weeks of pregnancy before a fetal heartbeat can be detected, tweeting that “Christian extremists are passing forced birth laws” to stop women from terminating their pregnancies.
“Christian extremists are passing forced birth laws to intimidate & cut off abortion services – including for victims of rape, incest, & child abuse,” she tweeted. “While we fight back, know you still have options. Pills can be mailed to your home discreetly.”
She also links to a website for “Plan C” pills that can terminate a pregancy until about 11 weeks. The group AID Access is providing the pills to women in Texas for a reduced cost, and in defiance of the law.
The Texas law allows private citizens to sue abortion providers and others who help women get abortions after the cutoff, but it is a state law that probably does not apply in other states.
Other Democrats including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and President Joe Biden, who both identify as Catholic, have also blasted the law.
