The Utah state legislature moved Friday to override a veto by Governor Spencer Cox (R) of a bill banning transgender students from competing on girls’ sports teams.
Cox said he “tried to do what I feel is the right thing regardless of the consequences.”
Salt Lake City, Utah is scheduled to host the NBA All-Star game in 2023, and some worry that the league will move the game as a result of the law’s passage.
Some Utah school districts are also worried about lawsuits from transgender athletes.
To answer these concerns, the legislature also passed a bill indemnifying school districts and activities from liability in any suits that arise.
