Judge Amy Coney Barrett was just attacked. Republicans are stunned and demanding justice immediately. This could have a direct impact on the upcoming election on November.
Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) excoriated his Democrat colleagues for attacking Barrett’s faith, specifically citing the now-infamous line from Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) to Barrett. “The dogma lives loudly within you,” Feinstein said.
That was during Barrett’s previous confirmation hearings for the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the California senator wasn’t the only one. Hawley noted that the “anti-Catholic bigotry” was present then and it has regrettably continued.
Ultimately, said Hawley, “This is an attempt to … bring back an old standard that the Constitution of the United States explicitly forbids. I’m talking about a religious test for office.”
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has even raised the specter of a religious test. But this is the direction that the Democratic Party has gone: Increasing the hostility towards religion, particularly Christian beliefs. And it is only going to get worse.
Still, Hawley has demanded a change from the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Democrat members, saying that “the pattern and practice of bigotry from members of this committee must stop.” We will see if his challenge is accepted.
