The U.S. narrowly beat China in the total gold medal count in the recent Tokyo Olympics, winning 39 to China’s 38.
China had a chance to tie up the gold count, but lost to Great Britain in the middleweight boxing final.
The U.S. also won the total medal count over China, with 25 more total medals. The U.S. medal count was 113 to China’s 88, making it the second-best Olympics the U.S. has had since the 1988 Los Angeles games.
Swimmer Caleb Dressel won five gold medals for various swimming events and Bobby Finke got two.
Other countries with top gold medal counts include Japan with 27 and Great Britain with 22.
