Florida is now reporting fewer coronavirus cases than blue states with strict mandates, and is tied with Georgia and Hawaii for the lowest number of new cases in the country.
Michigan’s new case rate of 4,881 per day is more than three times Florida’s rate of 1,506 per day. Pennsylvania’s rate was 4,589 and New York’s was 4,248. All three have Republican governors.
California’s rate under Gavin Newsom (D) is 6,353, or 16 per 1,000–a 61% increase over two weeks ago.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has refused to issue mask and vaccine mandates in his state, and has actively fought against local mandates.
Most counties in Florida that did have mask mandates in schools have now loosened those mandates as case counts have fallen.
