Attorney General William Barr could be throwing in the towel, and Washington, DC is in shock. They can’t believe it.
In fact, Barr may not appear at all before the Democrat-controlled House Judiciary Committee this week to discuss the infamous Mueller report.
The dispute is over the terms of his appearance. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has requested that only lawmakers question him about the Russia investigation.
However, Democrats are insisting that the committee’s lawyers also be allowed to pepper Barr with questions, which the DOJ flatly rejects as a possibility.
Only elected members of Congress “should be the ones doing the questioning,” said DOJ spokeswoman Kerri Kupec. “He remains happy to engage with members on their questions regarding the Mueller report.”
The DOJ’s concerns aren’t without warrant. It is no secret that Democrats want to turn this hearing into a political spectacle, and involving the committee’s lawyers to draw out Barr’s appearance is one way to do it.
