Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont said on Tuesday that he would “be open to primarying Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), who do not support breaking the filibuster.”
Manchin responded by saying that he really isn’t worried about anything that Bernie Sanders can do to him. “I’ve been primaried my entire life. That would not be anything new for me. It’s rough and tumble. We’re used to that. Bring it on.”
Kyrsten Sinema has been facing the wrath of liberals for the same reason as Manchin: she refuses to help Democrats bypass the filibuster. Politico is even reporting that Sinema is about to have ALL of her biggest donors “sever all funding to her if she doesn’t drop her opposition to changing Senate rules in order to pass voting rights legislation.”
Instead of pouting over sour grapes, perhaps Bernie could follow Senator Tammy Duckworth in moving on. “I just tell people we did the best that we could,” the Democrat from Illinois said. “I just say specifically that whoever votes no on the rules change, it’s their responsibility that we couldn’t get this done.”
Letting Manchin be responsible for his own actions isn’t good enough for Bernie Sanders. Bernie needs Manchin to comply.
Manchin’s made it clear: it isn’t going to happen.
