Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson responded Friday to Democrats’ calls for his resignation after a tumultuous hearing.
“I think we’ve reached a very sad point in our country where a hearing that is supposed to be about what the policies are becomes just attack, attack, attack,” Carson said.
On Thursday, Carson’s trademark calm, polite demeanor failed to win any sympathy from Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-Va.), who used the hearing as a chance to slam the Trump appointee.
“Secretary Carson lied to me and to Congress,” Wexton later tweeted. “He’s proven himself to be deceitful & inept as HUD Secretary. He should resign.”
Wexton was referring in part to a question she asked about potential changes to protections for transgender-identifying individuals at homeless shelters.
Carson later clarified that when he said the rule was “not in any way being altered,” he was referring specifically to a 2012 policy, though additions have been made to a 2016 rule.
