Attorney General William Barr just released a stunning reversal notice. Congress is shocked, especially the Democrats. They’ve been beaten at their own political games again.
According to Barr, former special counsel Robert Mueller requested a letter from the Department of Justice guiding him to limit his congressional testimony to his final report. This was a dramatic reversal from conventional wisdom.
House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, an anti-Trump Democrat who helped orchestrate Mueller’s testimony this week, called the letter “incredibly arrogant.” Translation: “I’m angry that this entire manufactured hearing is going to be dud.”
However, Barr rightly noted that Mueller “said that he intended to stick with the public report and not go beyond that” at his press conference many weeks ago after releasing his report.
Barr said that Mueller’s staff “was reiterating that that was their position and they asked us for guidance in writing to explain or to tell them [what] our position was. So we responded in writing. The department sent the guidance that they requested.”
Democrats who thought Mueller was going to go into any further detail than what he outlined in his report were delusional. While the investigation into Trump was a witch-hunt, Mueller wasn’t going to allow himself to look like a hypocrite.
