A federal court has reversed itself on two of four convictions or Jose Emanuel “Zafado” Garcia Sota and Jesus Ivan “Loco” Quezada Pina, two Los Zetas cartel assassins who killed an ICE agent and wounded another in 2011.
Sota and Pina were convicted of murder and attempted murder of a federal officer, using a firearm in relation to a crime of violence causing death, and a fourth count involving the killing of certain persons protected under international law. The murder and attempted murder convictions were vacated on a technicality, while the other two counts were upheld.
The two men are still serving life on the firearm count and 20 years for killing someone protected under international law.
Special Agent Jaime Zapata was killed in the attack, and Victor Avila was injured. 90 shell casings were found at the scene. The incident occurred as Sota and Pina were attempting to steal a vehicle.
It’s a shame that these murderers will get any kind of break after what they did. I’m glad they will still be in jail.
