In the wake of mass shootings over the weekend in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas, 51 people were also shot in Chicago over the weekend with seven fatalities. Chicago has the highest murder rate in the country, with about 24 murders per 100,000.
Chicago’s murder rate is more than New York and Los Angeles combined. The national average is 5.3 murders per 100,000.
This weekend’s shootings contributed to the shutting down of several hospital emergency rooms in the area. Mayor Lori Lightfoot called for actions to be taken to deal with the violence but didn’t specify what she thought should happen.
Over 1,000 people were arrested in just three months on gun charges, but many of them are already out on bail. Over the last 18 months many who were arrested for having guns have already been arrested again on similar charges.
Democrats, of course, think there should be more gun control to stop mass shootings, but Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the U.S., and it hasn’t stopped the criminals from getting illegal guns and continuing to kill people.
