Sir Sidney Poitier was the first black man to win a Best Actor Oscar, and he did it all the way back in 1964.
Now, in 2022, he’s passed away at the age of 94.
The Academy Award winner’s death was confirmed on January 7 by Bahamas Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell.
Among those singing the praises of Poitier after his death is Barack Obama, who said that Poitier “opened doors for a generation of actors. Michelle and I send our love to his family and legion of fans.”
A cause of death was not immediately disclosed, the recentness of Poitier’s passing makes it hard to collect all of the details surrounding the incident.
The news that we do have mostly comes from Bahamian Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper.
“Sadness that he would no longer be here to tell him how much he means to us, but a celebration that he did so much to show the world that those from the humblest beginnings can change the world and that we gave him his flowers while he was with us.”
