Unlike U.S. Soccer stars who declared, “I deserve it” or stomped on the U.S. flag after their recent World Cup win, forward Tobin Heath raised her eyes upward and thanked God for the win. The moment was captured in an Instagram photo that has been liked more than 173,000 times.
Heath has been a member of the team for at least 11 years, helping the women win two World Cups and Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012. She also plays professionally for the Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League.
U.S. Women’s team coach Jill Ellis said of Heath, “When opportunities have arisen for leadership moments, I think Tobin has embraced them.”
Heath says that being a Christian isn’t about putting anyone down or forcing belief on anyone. “It’s about Him being known and not in a way that forces it upon other people but in a way that lets people know how He’s transformed my life and how He’s given me purpose and meaning and love and satisfaction,” Heath said. “That’s the message of Jesus.
“It’s not a platform to impose on people,” Heath continued. “It’s a platform to love people. Our God’s going to be victorious. He’s the Creator of the universe. I’m just a vessel trying to do my part with what I’ve been given.”
