Tragedy has struck in a major metropolitan area leaving one dead and two injured, and a suspect has been arrested.
Louis Barnes, a 37-year-old male, has bee charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder in connection with an incident on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, according to a local news report.
New Orleans Police Chief Shaun Ferguson said the suspect is believed to have taken a firearm from the security guard attempting to remove him from a restaurant called Willie’s Chicken Shack. The suspect then began shooting.
The victim who passed away has been identified by The Times-Picayune, New Orleans’ local newspaper, as Julie Couvillon, a nurse who works for Ochsner Health System.
Ochsner Health System released a statement following the news of Couvillon’s passing. “We are terribly shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our friend and colleague,” read part of the statement.
The suspect’s other victim, the security guard, was shot in the neck and his condition was not immediately known. Barnes has a long criminal history, including battery of a teacher, disturbing the peace, and burglary.
