President Donald Trump is considering ending birthright citizenship with an executive order that some say could run counter to an amendment of the U.S. Constitution, according to Reuters.
Trump made the comments to reporters outside the White House on Wednesday. “We’re looking at that very seriously, birthright citizenship, where you have a baby on our land, you walk over the border, have a baby – congratulations, the baby is now a U.S. citizen. … It’s frankly ridiculous,” Trump said.
Opponents of illegal immigration have long complained that so-called “anchor babies” are intentionally birthed in the U.S. and that their parents then use the children’s legal status to try to get citizenship for themselves.
Changing the laws surrounding birthright citizenship could be a difficult proposition for Trump, however. The 14th amendment to the Constitution states that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States” are citizens.
The amendment has been interpreted to include children whose parents were not citizens or living in the United States, if the children were born within the U.S.
