To perhaps no one’s surprise, the rumors are true that, once again, CNN got it wrong.

CNN reported Wednesday that special counsel Robert Mueller’s report was expected to be delivered to the Justice Department this week. That expectation, however, was dashed two days later by the Justice Department itself.

The official gave no timetable for when Mueller’s final report on his Russia collusion probe will be delivered. But thanks to the rules governing the investigation, the question may be moot anyway.

Even after the report is filed, public access to its contents is not guaranteed. The only requirement is for a “confidential report explaining the prosecution or declination decisions” Mueller makes. In other words, after a lengthy and expensive probe that led to criminal charges for multiple officials for non-collusion related offenses, we may never learn what, if any, evidence Mueller uncovered of anyone ever actually committing an act of illegal collusion with the Russians.
