Jeb Bush Makes His Move – This Is Unthinkable
Jeb Bush may not be ready for a rematch against Donald Trump, but the failed 2016 presidential contender is calling for a champion to rise in his stead.
In a move that cuts against the unwritten rule that a sitting president is a shoo-in for his party’s nomination, Bush openly suggested that Republican voters need another option.
“I think someone should run just because Republicans ought to be given a choice,” Bush said. “It’s hard to beat a sitting president, but to have a conversation about what it is to be a conservative, I think it’s important.”
Bush’s opposition to the President has softened since the caustic 2016 race, when he famously jabbed Trump with the remark that at least he had children “who actually love me.”
For example, Bush credited him as having “acted in a good way and lifted people’s spirits in terms of economic growth and job creation.”
Nevertheless, it’s clear that tensions have remained between the President and the Bushes, who represent polar opposite wings of the Republican party — the former a populist outsider, the latter virtual royalty among establishment GOP insiders.
