In a brazen assault on the First Amendment, House Democrats are demanding “oversight” over Fox News’ editorial decisions — and they are demanding information that might eventually be used to review its choices regarding controversial hosts such as Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson.

Fox News executive Ken LaCorte wrote a stinging op-ed House Committee on Oversight and Reform chair Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md) pressured a Fox reporter to turn over documents regarding President Trump’s alleged relationship with Stormy Daniels.

The implication of the demand is that Fox held the story until after the election to protect Trump and may therefore have violated campaign finance law.

However, such an accusation ignores the fact that the mostly liberal mainstream media bakes bias into its political reporting on a daily basis, and that this bias is protected by the First Amendment’s free speech provision.

“If House Oversight can launch an investigation based on the ridiculous notion that publishing, or even more bizarrely not publishing, a story can be construed as an in-kind campaign contribution, then no journalist in America is safe from government intimidation,” LaCorte wrote.

“It’s a vast overreach of power, and I won’t have any part of it.”
