After a wildly successful Hollywood career, actor John Wayne passed away in Calfornia on June 11, 1979. But now his family has received a heartbreaking announcement about his legacy.

Following a recently unearthed 1971 interview with Wayne from Playboy magazine, calls are being made to rename John Wayne Airport, located in Orange County, due to comments many have found to be offensive.

In the interview, Wayne mentioned that he supports “white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don’t believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people.”

Wayne also used a politically incorrect term to describe the romance of two men in the movie ‘Midnight Cowboy’ and said taking land from the Indians to colonize America “was just a matter of survival.”

Wayne’s family quickly responded to the uproar. “Regardless of color, ethnicity or sexual preference, [our] father taught us to treat all people the same, with respect,” said part of their statement.

Writing for the Washington Examiner, Madeline Fry noted that this entire scenario “only validates what many Americans are coming to believe: You can’t say anything anymore, darn it, without being discovered and punished by the mob.”
