On the heels of being investigated for campaign finance violations, Rep. Ilhan Omar’s entire record is back in the news, including her 2013 arrest — a shocking incident that was only confined to Minnesota. Now, it’s spreading nationwide.

Omar was arrested in connection to a visit by the president of Somalia. The 2013 event was at a hotel, and after the police had cleared the lobby of visitors, she found a way to sneak back in and refused to leave. She was arrested for trespassing.

When she chose to run for Congress in 2018, the Minnesota GOP tried to warn voters about Omar with a billboard in her district that read “Stop Ilhan” and said she’s “dangerous for Minnesota,” but she was still elected by 78.2-percent.

Unfortunately, Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District includes Minneapolis, and voters haven’t sent a Republican to Congress in this district since 1962 — defeating her was always a long shot. Her GOP opponent, Jennifer Zielinski, only got 21.8-percent of the vote.

Maybe if she’s convicted of campaign finance violations there will be more appetite to replace her. The Minnesota Campaign Finance Board is expected to release a ruling soon on the allegations — filed by state Rep. Steve Drazkowski — that she misspent thousands of campaign dollars.

However, you would think a fairly recent arrest for criminal trespassing would’ve dissuaded more voters, but it’s difficult to be successful in deep-blue areas of the country. Apparently, even anti-Semitism gets a pass in Minnesota’s 5th District as well.
