California Governor Gavin Newsom just ended plans for a high-speed rail system designed to connect northern and southern California. The project was launched a decade ago by former CA Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Newsom admitted in the announcement that the project would “would cost too much and respectfully take too long.” He went on to say that “there simply isn’t a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to L.A.”
The proposal was affirmed by California voters in 2008 and was hailed as an environmentally progressive step into the future. However, the lack of transparency and oversight doomed the project to failure.
This news strikes a major blow Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s ‘Green New Deal’, which proposes investing heavily into high-speed rail systems.
