Friday on “The Van Jones Show,” Rep. Tulsi Gabbard became one of the first Democrats to officially throw their hat in the next presidential race.

The Hawaiian congresswoman faces huge odds. She was perceived as a traitor by fellow Dems when she broke with the party to endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders against Hillary Clinton in the previous primary. She also earned the ire of the rabidly anti-Trump left by simply meeting with then-President-elect Trump during his transition period.

Tulsi is unlikely to draw support from the right, either, with her solid progressive record and her plan to push an anti-war, pro-environmentalist, pro-socialist healthcare agenda. Republicans welcome her civil demeanor—a rare virtue these days—but good table manners alone won’t win votes.

While Tulsi may be a minor player, perhaps her early entry into the race is an omen that the left will continue to be as viciously divided this election as in the last.
